Department of Computer Science &
Engineering
This document is intended to serve as a general source of information for M.Sc., M.Phil. and
Ph.D. students offering Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science,
Intelligent System Engineering and Information Systems in the Department
of Computer Science & Engineering. Students that are admitted into any of these programmes,
are required to undergo a rigorous but well-structured course of study, which is expected to
develop them mentally, physically and morally.
Each and every activity is designed to bring out the best out of every student by making
them develop their various talents and skills. As it is the case in many universities,
students are expected to interact with teaching and technical
staff as well as other students throughout their period of stay in the university. This
interaction will assist students in their chosen course of study. There are, however, some
administrative procedures in the university which students
must be aware of for them to benefit fully from the opportunities provided by the Obáfémi
Awólówò University. This report is divided into several sections each of which will
introduce readers to the structure and administration of
the university as well as provide some hints on how to handle common problems within the
university environment. Students are, however, advised strongly to contact their Academic
Adviser (Programme Coordinator) before taking any major
decision in respect of their academic work. This document is not an alternative to your
Programme Administrator or Head of Department. The information provided by the Head of
Department, or any person acting on behalf of the Head of
Department, takes precedence over the information provided in this handbook. As much as
possible, we have tried to make information in this document as accurate as possible. The
university’s programme handbook contains all the necessary
details in respect of programmes offered in the Department. You are also strongly advised to
consult the most resent official rules and regulations before completing registration and
other forms. In case of any conflict or doubt, please
do contact your Programme Administrator.
Brief History of the Faculty
At the time the Faculty of Technology at Ifè came into
existence in
1970, the university set itself the goal of developing areas of Technology and
Engineering that were not adequately covered by existing University programmes in the
country. This was why it started by first developing programs in Agricultural
Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, and Food
Science and Technology. By 1974, the Technology Planning and Development
Unit (now African Institute for Science Policy and Innovation) was established primarily
to conduct policy research on how to harness science and technology for economic
development. Its establishment underscored the critical need
for research capability and advisory capacity to assist government and other policy
making–bodies in reaching decisions about the allocation and monitoring of resources for
the development of scientific and technological capabilities
in Nigeria and in other less developed countries. It was however realized from the
beginning that by the time the programme in Agricultural Engineering is fully developed
considerable amount of equipment would have been accumulated
for teaching the science and practice of Civil and Mechanical Engineering. Thus, it
became clear that these traditional areas of engineering needed to be developed. In
1977, the University decided to nurture Civil Engineering in
the Department of Agricultural Engineering and Mechanical Engineering in the Department
of Chemical Engineering. The demand for Metallurgical Engineers and Scientists in the
country, and the search for minerals in various parts
of the country, which gained momentum in the 70s, with the need for local expertise in
the evaluations and exploitation of minerals, informed the establishment of the
Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering in 1978.
Brief History of the University, Faculty and
Department
The Department of Computer Science was established in 1970 in
order
to meet the nation's need for skilled manpower in this rapidly expanding field. A study
of the requirements of industry, commerce, government and research organizations
was carried out and several meetings were held with practitioners in the field. From
these interactions with industry, it became clear that emphasis is shifting and the
market for joint honours degree in computing is fast dwindling.
A major area of need easily identifiable is Computer Information Technology geared
toward the production of Hardware Systems Engineers, Software Systems Engineers, System
Analysts, and Programmers. At the moment, there are several
computer installations without adequate software and hardware personnel support. In
spite of this, a proliferation of numerous computer projects is anticipated. It is
envisaged that graduates of these programmes will meet Nigeria's
Electronic Data Processing (IT) needs and find employment in industry, commerce and
governments where there are needs for Programmers, Software Systems Engineers, Computer
Engineers and Systems Analysts and Designers.
