Department of Quantity Surveying

The postgraduate programmes in quantity surveying combine intensive work in the field of construction economics; project management and emerging non-conventional procurement arrangements with an extension of the students own practical work in quantity surveying in relation to the functions of the construction economist and construction cost and legal adviser. The curricula are designed to prepare these qualified men and women for higher professional achievement in the practice and teaching of their specialty. The programmes are rooted in belief that the built environment mirrors the national economy. Economies that still have large mass housing and infrastructure to provide and/or maintain for the teaming populace. The provision of high quality work force to meet the challenges of a developing economy is indispensable. These challenges include requirements and research endeavours to promote the built environment and general development of the society.

Objectives

The graduate programmes leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in the department of Quantity Surveying are designed to:

  1. Provide a comprehensive review of the economic aspects of construction, to examine procedures and techniques of economic and financial control applicable to both design and construction sector of the industry.
  2. Increase the availability of appropriate manpower for the construction industry particularly for teaching/research and production of high quality work force that can cope with the increasing and ever-changing sophistication in the construction industry both locally and internationally.
  3. Enhance the competitiveness of quantity surveyors in both local and international environment.

OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

The objectives of the department are:

  1. teaching and training of Nursing, Dentistry, Medical Rehabilitation and Medical students at pre-clinical levels
  2. training of Mortuary attendants and generation of funds from embalmment Services
  3. to contribute at a high level to health services through diagnostic laboratory services
  4. to inculcate in students, scientific and intellectual approach to health problems and the humility to learn
  5. training of postgraduate personnel at M.Sc and Ph.D levels so as to obviate the acute shortage of highly trained Medical Scientists and other allied disciplines in the field of Anatomy in Nigeria

Degrees being Offered

The Department of Quantity Surveying offers graduate programmes in:

  1. M.Sc. (Quantity Surveying)
  2. Ph.D. (Quantity Surveying)

Requirements for Higher Degrees

The Department of Quantity Surveying offers graduate programmes in:

  1. M.Sc. Quantity Surveying

    The duration of the M.Sc. degree will be a minimum of 12 months. Course work required is a minimum of 20 course units which shall comprise the compulsory core courses and other elective courses chosen in the approved field of specialization.

    Candidates may be allowed to select additional courses from other Departments on the recommendation of the Head of Department.

    The degree of M.Sc. (Quantity Surveying) will be awarded after successful completion of course work and passing the prescribed examinations including a thesis. The thesis is a minimum of 6 course units and the topic must be given prior approval by the Board of Post-graduate Studies.

  2. PhD. Quantity Surveying

    The duration of the Ph.D. degree will be a minimum of 4 semesters after the M .Sc. Course work required is a minimum of 12 course units chosen from recommended electives available in the Department

    Candidates may be allowed to select up to 3 course units from other Departments with the consent of the Head of Department.

    In addition, each candidate will be required to conduct research and present an acceptable. Thesis on an approved project. He/she shall be required to pass an oral examination.

Admission Requirements

Candidates must satisfy the general regulation governing graduate studies in the Obafemi Awolowo University. In addition, the following conditions must be fulfilled.

  1. Candidates for the M.Sc. Degree Programme

    Candidates must have a honours degree of the Obafemi Awolowo University or its equivalent in Quantity Surveying, Building/Building Technology.

    In addition, candidates are expected to have a minimum of 2 years post first degree appropriate working experience in a recognized office/firm.

  2. Candidates for the Ph.D. Programme

    Candidates must have M.Sc. degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management and Economics, Construction Economics from the Obafemi Awolowo University or from other recognized institutions.
